One of the things which first strikes the visitor to Nicaragua’s Corn Island is the dichotomy of the people, their language and their customs compared with those on the mainland. The local islanders, descendant from the original British prospectors, make their living from harvesting lobster and fish from the prolific, offshore fishing banks. They are friendly and helpful. They are both English and Spanish speaking people with an incredibly diverse culture.

The laid-back atmosphere and lifestyle seem to overtake anyone who comes to Corn Island. Here, an excellent dinner from a street vendor runs about $1.50, the local beer is always cold and you can buy rum by the bottle at the restaurant.

Just a mile southeast of Corn Island divers can explore the wreck of a Spanish galleon, which lies in 72 feet of clear water. Since this area was a favorite of pirates it is thought that many other ancient wrecks-some most certainly still containing their rich cargo-lie in the turquoise waters off Corn Island.
